Description

Greetings! Well this was my first attempt at making a papier-mâché mask since I was 6 years old. I think it came out well for my first attempt. So I found this cheap face mask at some random Halloween store (cost about 3 dollars) and used it as the base. I then cut out the ears from random bits of cardboard and taped them to the mask with masking tape. For the actual plaster mix I made it from a flour, salt, and water mix (I put in just enough water until it had the consistency of runny pancake batter). Taking strips of newspaper I built up my desired shape and then let it dry overnight. I then took liquid Elmer’s glue and watered it down, (I would say 3 parts glue one part water). Using said liquid I took strips of newspaper and laid down one layer. The glue mixture gave it a nice smooth shell. It only took an hour to dry. I then took white tissue paper cut into small squares and laid down about three layers using the glue mixture. Let dry overnight. Then I painted the whole thing with white Gesso (let dry for three hours min.) and then used oil paint for the design. The oil paint took about three days to dry as I left it in the sun to speed up the process. I finished it with a spray on Satin Varnish Make sure the paint is completely dry before you spray on the varnish or you’ll be sorry! All in all it took me a week to complete.
